DEPTFORD DANCE ACADEMY

The concept of my design is to create a new dominant landmark for Deptford, in which it will draw local street dancers to the site in where they can perform and compete against each other to show off their talent.
The form of the building is dynamic and contemporary inspired by the movement and form of dance movement. The dance academy sitting above the local buildings will draw people attention through its art show via its external cladding can be seen from the train station and market square.

INTERACTION

The Deptford dance academy was designed to bring all street dancers together and help them increase value to their performance. What this means is that the academy helps them choreography their routine and organises them in potential shows where they can perform their talent to many more people than they would on the street. This can therefore act as a stepping-stone for the career and hopefully start something new for these performers.

MATERIAL

The chosen material of my design was entirely inspired by the theme of my project, street dance. The dance first came from the streets where a dancer uses local surroundings in helping them choreography their dance routine. Where materials around help them restrict in movement the building uses this idea and flows the material of street into the building.
The main chosen materials tarmac and concrete is a classic outdoor material, I have chosen to use. These two allows performers to flow in between spaces efficiently creating an extendable stage for them to perform on. The corrugated plastic was taken on from semester 1 where I have used it for a roofing cladding in which it acts with acoustic and light I thought it will be relevant to bring them together as it acts as a liking point of the Creek and the dance academy.

URBANISM

Site 1
Project: Echo Creek
Interaction between performers with site.

BRIEF

The street of Deptford is filled with many talented performers, from street dancers to contemporary dancers. However the limited number of performance spaces has pushed a majority of the population onto the streets of Deptford and has now provoked a potentially negative perception to its borough.

I will create an interaction point where dancers come together and choreograph a piece of performance art where they can then perform, to the public. While the space is in use, the facade of the building will react to the performance within, to attract the public's attention on the street and draw them in. The whole idea of this is to interact space with people and see how space can inspire people to perform.

The space will act as a wing of the Laban centre, however will be open to the public to encourage the community to collaborate together.

INTERVENTION

The aim is to create a pavilion structure were street performers can perform in. The open site creates a fascinating space where it draws people from around the area of Deptford with the usage of sound and lighting. It allows street performers to stage their acts so that by passers can experience their talent.

TRADING

The sale of recession gold has taken many peoples interest this weekend on Ebay. Each nugget cost a total of 58p to make, and the first recession nugget was sold for a total of £5.50 (£4.92 profit).

The feedback from the buyer was “although we are currently living in an recession, there’s no reason in why we can’t treat ourselves to a little bling, for fraction of the price”

MANIFESTO

Architecture is like nature, it should create an impact because of its size and colour; it should grow to fit around the public, so that people are comfortable around the building as they would in the nature!

Image: experimental project by adding value to things around us with no value! will the essence of gold, change the way you see an everyday object?
