The concept of the Waste Exchange is based on the consumer/waste cycle, bio-digestion, and distribution networks. The factory itself produces fuel by re-processing organic waste sourced locally. For the building to function properly the various collection and delivery/distribution networks need to be thought out alongside the physical entity of the building. Waste is collected from homes and businesses by conventional refuse vehicles, either from centralised or household bins. In the factory natural gas is produced and fed back into the national network whilst the digestate can be used as a fertiliser in gardens or allotments in the city or in farms and greenhouses for larger scale food production. Pollution released through conventional disposal techniques and the overall human environmental impact is reduced by closely looking at where waste occurs and finding alternative uses.
